Workshop Descriptions

The following are brief outlines of each workshop which will be featured at the 2008 Career Day:

Taking Ownership of Your Life

Purpose of presentation is to have the attendees evaluate the direction of their lives and recognize who is in the driver's seat. In a car only one person can drive, all the others are just along for the ride. If the driver is not going in the direction one desires, there are only three options: 1) wait for the vehicle to stop to get out the vehicle, 2) open the door and jump out the moving vehicle, or 3) just keeping riding. Most Youth today spend more time following the crowd than they do developing the leader within.

Control Your Future, Be Your Own Boss

Students learn basic skills and behaviors necessary to own and operate their own business.  There will be the interactive "Who's The Boss" game to expose students to essential business skills and presentation by a local entrepreneur with an opportunity to ask questions.

First Impressions are Lasting Impressions

We will focus on three key business etiquette elements to job search success.

Advocacy & Leadership Development

This workshop is designed to highlight the value of studying and understanding history to showcase the current work and accomplishments of contemporary African American leaders and organizations.  The workshop will distinguish between the important work of social services and the empowerment that comes through social justice advocacy.  Participants will be reminded that ‘the best way to predict the future is to create it’ and encouraged to take charge of their futures through involvement, commitment and self-awareness.
